Peripherals are external devices that connect to your computer to extend its capabilities. These include your keyboard, mouse, headset, microphone, webcam, printer, speakers, and external hard drives. Most peripheral devices require prior approval before connecting to ONE-Net devices. DO NOT connect a peripheral and use it before approval and enablement is obtained. You may be flagged for a violation and lose access until your account is successfully re-enabled. Below are the requirements and processes to obtain approval and enablement of peripherals on ONE-Net.
Note: Wireless peripherals of any kind are NOT authorized. As always, reach out to the IT team with a support request if you need clarification.
Keyboards and Mice
USB mice and keyboards are human interface devices that do not need approval as long as they do not require software to work and do not contain internal memory. If you plug in a keyboard or mouse and it tries to install software or is recognized by the computer as having memory, you will be flagged for a violation.
Speakers
If your speakers connect using a 3.5mm headphone jack, you should be good to go. If your speaker plugs in using USB, it is treated the same as keyboards and mice; ensure that it doesn't require software to work and doesn't contain internal memory.
Microphones, Headsets, and Webcams
If you want to connect a headset, webcam, or microphone to your ONE-Net devices, they must be an approved product and then approved to be used by you on your computer. All approved products are listed on the ONE-Net Approved Products List (APL). If it is there, then submit a support request with either the Headset-Microphone form or Webcam-Microphone acknowledgement form below for the IT team to process. Please indicate the manufacturer, model, and serial number of the device in your request. Note that the built-in webcam on ONE-Net laptops is considered a peripheral and needs the same approval process mentioned here to be enabled.
Printers and Scanners
Printers, scanners, and combination printer-scanner-copier devices we call Multifunction Devices (MFDs) must also be listed on the ONE-Net APL. That being said, ONE-Net has been pushing for the reduction of standalone printers and scanners. As such, many have been consolidated into MFDs that many users share. If you wish to obtain a new MFD, please submit a support request letting the IT team know where you would like it to go and the justification. We will then work with you and Finance to obtain one using the MFD contract with the Defense Logistics Agency.
External Hard Drives
Connecting external hard drives to ONE-Net is extremely rare and only approved for exceptional reasons. If you wish to connect an external hard drive to your ONE-Net computer, please submit a support request with justification and the IT team will work with you.
